Bernie Sanders should have been the Democratic nominee and elected president in 2016.
I wasn't able to vote for him in the 2015 primary because it was over before my state was able to hold a Democratic primary. I did vote for Bernie in the 2019 primary.

No. Neither of those things happened. People who might have run for the presidency in 2015 stepped aside because it was Hillary Clinton's "turn". That gave Bernie Sanders an opening he would not have otherwise have had. He ended up benefiting, not being harmed. And the national attention he received allowed him to try again in 2019. He wasn't a candidate that would have otherwise gained any traction, unfortunately.
As far as "saving democracy" (or not saving it) goes, this time tRump and his handlers will be SURE to destroy it. They put out a 900 page document describing how they're going to kill it for certain. If their puppet gets back in the White House. Thiel shelled out bigly to buy his tRump handler the vp slot.
