Ask yourself this question. In a country of 300m guns, what means must you employ to guarantee that the "gun free zone" is actually gun free? The "honor system" currently employed obviously isn't working.
What law would have prevented the Parkland shooting? A "red-flag" law (temporary restriction)? The subject had tens if not hundreds of "red-flag" incidents. Mental illness isn't "the flu". It doesn't disappear after a week.
...and no criminal is going to obey your law. There is no law harsh enough to deter someone intent upon committing murder, which already carries the harshest legal penalty possible. Death.

The maximum confiscation period on California's red-flag law is one year. On day 366, the nut gets his guns back.
The 2nd Amendment's a b*tch. There's zero chance that it will EVER be repealed.
ps - And just wait until statistics show that minorities have their guns confiscated in higher percentages than whites...
