And If gas prices spike again, electrical grid problems worsen, or middle-class flight accelerates, opponents would likely frame Steyer as the face of elite, ideologically driven governance disconnected from ordinary Californians struggling to afford rent, groceries, and utilities. In that environment, Newsom could suddenly appear has “restrained” by comparison. And he may even look like he know what he’s doing? If California’s economic pressures deepen under that kind of leadership, voters could begin romanticizing the Newsom era the same way some Americans later softened their views on Presidents they once strongly opposed.
