What if, neither of them being theologians or even religious scholars, they weren't lying but rather ignorant of the subject matter. Or worse, saw the popular trappings if Christian religion and co-opted them for their own nefarious purposes?
I don't recall Hitler wringing his hands and floating about how evil he was. Obviously his moral compass pointed to a pole well far away from what Christianity actually represents. At least the Spanish missionaries of North America and South America bothered to try to proselytize and evangelize the indigenous natives so their souls would go to heaven when they slaughtered them.
