Failing Karl Popper's Paradox of Tolerance

Karl Popper, "The Open Society and Its' Enemies

Less well known [than other paradoxes Popper discusses] is the paradox of tolerance:

Unlimited tolerance must lead to the disappearance of tolerance. If we extend unlimited tolerance even to those who are intolerant, if we are not prepared to defend a tolerant society against the onslaught of the intolerant, then the tolerant will be destroyed, and tolerance with them.—In this formulation, I do not imply, for instance, that we should always suppress the utterance of intolerant philosophies; as long as we can counter them by rational argument and keep them in check by public opinion, suppression would certainly be most unwise. But we should claim the right to suppress them if necessary even by force; for it may easily turn out that they are not prepared to meet us on the level of rational argument, but begin by denouncing all argument; they may forbid their followers to listen to rational argument, because it is deceptive, and teach them to answer arguments by the use of their fists or pistols. We should therefore claim, in the name of tolerance, the right not to tolerate the intolerant. We should claim that any movement preaching intolerance places itself outside the law and we should consider incitement to intolerance and persecution as criminal, in the same way as we should consider incitement to murder, or to kidnapping, or to the revival of the slave trade, as criminal.

  1. Down with White Supremacy! Your days are numbered, Minus. Although I expect more violence from those of your ilk as you see your privilege slip away. We will NOT back down.

    This is 15 freaking minutes into Lindsay's strawman screed. I was going to bail, thinking, when the f*ck is he going to get to his point? FYI, THIS is the situation we have in the United States. There is no "suppression". Dotard was banned from twitter because they were concerned (rightly) that he would incite further violence. Suppressing violence isn't unwise. The capitol riot is proof that trumpers aren't prepared to meet us on the level of rational argument.

    "It will maintain the status quo if we maintain rationality"... sure, if we go with what is "rational" as defined by the White Supremacist right. The Left fails Karl Popper's paradox of tolerance... using Lindsay's strawman arguments and willful distortions.

  4. Woke = Ignoring negative cultural differences and pretending social equality.

    Meanwhile in Portland, the violence continues to be ignored cuz Antifa doesn't exist...

  5. Huh? The video you linked to doesn't mention AntiFa. AT ALL. Meanwhile, in Canada, the Proud Boys have been declared a terrorist organization.

    fyi, woke doesn't involve ignoring cultural differences or pretending social equality. "Woke is a term that originated in the United States, referring to a perceived awareness of issues that concern social justice and racial justice". Your definition is a strawman. Your criticisms (and the criticisms of the people in the videos you posted) are criticisms of this strawman, not reality.

  6. btw, why are you wearing a bathrobe in the last YouTube you posted? Couldn't be bothered to get dressed?

  7. btw, I was only kidding, but that IS you in that last video, isn't it? He (you) mentions wearing 10 masks. Right after I linked you to this. Coincidence?

  8. Woke = "I can't think for myself. Waaaaah! Feed me!"

  9. trumpism = I can't think for myself. I need a cult leader to obediently follow.

  10. trumpism = Applauding leaders who are willing to call out the hypocrisies of the sanctimonious governing elite

  11. ...while embracing/applauding/ignoring/denying the hypocrisies of your own orange turd cult leader.

    trumpism = White Supremacism.

  12. I sure don't see you calling out anything Biden ever does...

    Progressivism = WOKE Supremacism

  13. Like what? And being a decent human being hardly makes one supreme. Just not deplorable.

  14. Like playing SuperMario Karts to stave off dementia symptoms...after calling a "lid" on all evening press events. Deplorable is not invoking the 25th Amendment and letting Kamala conduct the day to day for the remaining 3 years and 11 months of Biden's placeholder term.

  15. Why the f*ck would I "call out" Joe Biden for having dementia and somehow it up... when that isn't happening? Not every old person gets Dementia. Many (like Joe Biden) are sharp until the day they die. I'm looking forward to voting to give Joe Biden a second term in 2024.

  16. Joe Biden is mentally and physically fit. Dotard is neither.

  17. Joe Biden is at Ronald Reagan's mental acuity level when he LEFT office.

  18. I hear that DC Police are making everyone in the DC metro area memorize the number 1-888-813-USSS in case Joe inadvertently wanders off.

  19. Where did you hear that, a QAnon chat room? Corn Pop is likely dead. You talk about these same stories (over and over) WAY more than Joe Biden. Enjoy your BDS. It's all you have. Your guy is now a failed/disgraced former president. Only president to be impeached twice. Soon to be the only former president to serve prison time (post presidency) :P

  20. I hear Biden has given up on repeating his "very fine people" story about Trump since the claim was publicaly debunked AGAIN at Trump's impeachment trial.

    ReplyDelete
  21. It wasn't. There were only two sides: the pro-traitors to America side and the anti-traitors to America side. The marchers were chanting "Jews will not replace us". Your bullshit has been continually debunked. The people you refer to (descendants of the traitors who are proud of their "heritage") were not even there.

    ReplyDelete
  22. The March and the protest over statues weren't separate events on different days and at different times? Trump UNEQUIVOCALLY condemned the racist march. Hence the "LIE" that you continue to peddle that there were "no good people" there.

    ReplyDelete
  23. You remind me of Procrustes, who would tie his enemies to a bed and saw off their limbs.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I'm not for sawing off anyone's limbs. There is no lie. Dotard referred to nazis and neo-confederates as "very fine people". And the "heritage" argument is BS.

    ReplyDelete
  25. You certainly saw the limbs off other people's arguments. Especially if that "other" is DJT.
