That isn't going to be what happens. That things need to get worse before they can get better is wholly due to human stupidity. It's not necessary. People could simply chose to act in their own best interests now. Or they could have. The chance to elect Bernie Sanders president came and went. People chose to double down on stupidity. You want them to triple down on stupidity and are hopeful that stupidity translates into people quadrupling down on stupidity.
I think they will FINALLY chose otherwise. IMO a new FDR-style progressive age is around the corner. In the meantime there will be a lot of unnecessary suffering.

State governments were the device that the Founders envisioned for keeping the Central (Federal) Government in Check. These powers were dismantled after the Civil War. States had armies responsible to State Governors, not the federal government (Continentals). If the Feds wanted to force an issue, they needed cooperation from State Governora.
